I believe that in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, all citizens should have access to basic health care. We are the only developed nation in the world that doesn’t provide universal access to its citizens and we pay far more for worse outcomes. A single-payer system like Medicare for all would provide everyone in this country the ability to get the care they need at a lower cost than we pay now.
Our communities, particularly in rural areas as we have seen with the closing of the hospital in Independence, are suffering from this inefficient system. Healthcare for all provides those communities not only with the basic services they need but also with well-paying jobs and the ability to attract new industry.
Affordable Higher Education
There was a time in this country when a person of meager means could work a part time job and put themselves through college or vocational training and give themselves a chance to better their financial situation. It was never easy, it required hard work, sacrifice, and sometimes a lack of sleep, but it was a possibility. We have moved on from that time, and today it is no longer possible to wait tables in the evening or change oil at a service station and put yourself through school. We are denying an entire generation of people the opportunity to make the most of themselves if they are willing to put in the work.
The debate over what we can do about gun violence in this country has veered so far off the road that meaningful discussion seems almost impossible. There are elements of gun control that have widespread support throughout the country and could serve as a logical starting point in addressing the high rates of gun violence we see in this country. The vast majority of this country believes that any gun purchase or transfer should require a universal background check. Responsible gun ownership means accountability and most responsible gun owners agree that we have to get guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them. A national registry that ties a gun to its owner would allow law enforcement to stem the tide of gun trafficking to those who shouldn’t be in possession of a firearm. Responsible gun owners know how to operate their weapon safely, how to store it in a manner that keeps it out of the hands of those who shouldn’t be operating it. Requiring those who want to carry outside of the home to demonstrate their knowledge of gun safety and their competence and proficiency with the weapon is not an unreasonable requirement.
After World War II and under the direction of Kansan Dwight Eisenhower this country set about creating the greatest infrastructure system in the world. From our Interstate highway system, to our airport network, rural electrification and power grid, water and waste systems we built a model for the rest of the world. For decades this investment in our country paid enormous economic returns as well as improving the quality of life for all Americans. That important, game-changing investment into infrastructure stopped. We have allowed our infrastructure to crumble and become outdated. I believe we need to reinvest in the core of this country, modernize our air travel systems, repair and renew our highway system, build out and protect our power grid as well as the internet that drives commerce globally.
These kind of initiatives will provide quality jobs that pay well and will also ensure our ability to grow and adapt to the economy of the future.
